Dynamics

I like hearing them. And this song actually has some dynamics at all. That's pretty awesome. I think there needs to be a bit more sudden decrescendo and crescendo for enhancement instead of only one at the start and at the end (sort of ).

I would expect a symphonic band to play this sort of stuff. The feel of the tension is amazingly awesome. For an orchestral song on NG, this is excellent. Very well done, I hope you win, or something, the competition. Good work!

blackattackbitch responds:

More sudden dynamics? I can make that happen.

Thanks for the review, I'm hoping I do well in the contest, although there are plenty of artists who, quite frankly, compose better orchestral stuff than I could ever hope to do.

And I'm glad you liked it, I was a bit nervous at first lol

Brill ambience

I just finished reviewing your (at this time) newest song, and I honestly have to say, this song is better. The song's main feel and idea were awesome, and it takes someone really talented to create this kind of ambiance.

Rhythmically, it's better than the other song, but still pretty simple. It gets the job done, though, and that's what really matters. The pad/lead at the end could have been changed to something else, I think, but the melody is nice.

Great work, this time around!

Beat

I don't like the drums. Sounds too simple, for one, but also doesn't sound chiptun-y enough. Melodically, this song is a bit erratic; it seemed to be pretty random scaling.

But you're just starting the chiptune revolution. Many of these instruments don't belong in the chiptune category, just so you know. It's an OK track, needs some improvement. Alright work.

For a first song...

...this is excellent. I can't help thinking you didn't experience the "room for improvement" thought most newbies have, because it is a very valuable tool in shaping your style. "Daylight mist" seems like a name you chose at random. Sorry, but I don't think it fits.

Oh well, musically, this song is pretty nice. The VSTs, or instruments, whatever you used, sound really good together, meaning you probably spent a great deal of time choosing them.

Rhythms (particularly the drum rhythms) were simple but nice. Melodies were even nicer; the song progressed very well.

All in all, a quality track!

Tyurru responds:

I'm not one for naming, when i submitted the song, there was misty outside and its was beautifull, Thank You so much for the postive reveiw, really means alot :D and yes I great deal of time finding the right sounds to use, took about a million and one attemps to get everything to fit nicley in place! I started end of 2009 just taken alot of time to get around to finishing it.

Many Thanks

The Dutch are intense

Woah. I wasn't expecting that, especially with my speakers on high. I don't like this kind of music, but it was okay sounding. The auto-tuned vocals were so unnecessary; if you can afford a decent quality mic, just learn to sing. Eh, not much to say about this song. I would give it a 5 if I didn't lol at the start. Decent effort.

Nice rhythms

True, I do like these plugin's sounds. Instrumentally, this song is pretty great, especially the drumming; they are very nicely syncopated. Could have used more bass rhythm and volume, but that's okay. The sax and tuba both could have been mixed better (if you are, or know any sax players, note down how they play), but that's also okay. Here, melodically and rhythmically, this piece is something I would get down to. Well done!

Special-Ed responds:

nice advice!
lol, I just realized, by the sound of it, that's a three string guitar... T_T I guess adding 3 more strings would create a more realistic sound...

Rock music flowing through the veins

Rock is a special genre, as it is probably the most expressive and powerful musical genre if used correctly (Seconded by only symphonic ambient music, imo). I love it when newcomers to the genre try their hand at making some awesome rocking, so welcome! I like the rhythms and the drum instrument choices, you do a good job with that, however some syncopation would be nice in this song (or just some complex rhythmic diversions). This isn't done enough in most generic radio rock, so keep this in mind. The guitar sound isn't very intense, and could be more SUPER STRENGTH (if you're using a program that allows plugins or effects with a mixer, look up Tube Amp with tone controls, turn gain up, but be wary of ear raping volume), meaning the hard-punching guitar rhythms should be way up there in terms of volume. The lead guitar sounds could have used more sweeping, and tbh was a little boring.

All in all, a good introduction to your rock skills. Keep it up man!

Woaah thank you for your detailed review! I will keep that in mind!

Old

I remember when I was young(er), I wrote my very first songs, and they were okay. I've improved so much since then, I can't even tell you, but in retrospect, they were actually pretty good. This is what I feel on this track. I can't say much, as it's an old piece, except well done!

30 minutes is good

This song is alright, but has no real hooking. The rhythm is the main focus here, obviously, and I don't think this was exploited enough. Melodically, the song needs much more. Hearing the same tone over and over again is annoying, even if it's rhythmically awesome. For a 30 minute song (production time), it's alright, but should be more. Good effort!

zacharycc42 responds:

thanks for the advice, i might remix this

Could be more

I've listened to a lot of ambient music, this one is one of those ones that lean towards techno, and nearly always have a bassy drum part. Ambient is, to me, meaningful and breathtaking, but it was harder to identify here. Ambient relies on dynamic change and panning, and I don't think there was enough. I didn't feel the movements in the song as they went.

The positive is the song has great potential if remastered, and with different instruments. Make sure you know what you're going for in terms of theme and feel, because otherwise you'd just be taking wild pokes at making music. I think you're better than that.

Sorry if this sounds too negative/not what you were after, I try to be as critical as I can to a composer's advantage.

TheJCRevolution responds:

thanks for that, thats actually exactly what i was after. i prefer criticism (as long as its constructive lol) over being told a song is good anyday.

this was my first attempt at ambient music, so of course it was very hit and miss, im used to making techno so no surprises it came out sounding like it really. hopefully my attempts at them will turn out better in future.

ill definitely have another go at it with all this in mind, you seem to know what youre talking about :D thanks :)

I write music for video games. I also write video games. I am also "Fyaopo" for those who want to know.
